Mike DiMeo (born November 29, 1968, in New York City) is a highly respected American hard rock and heavy metal vocalist, keyboardist, and songwriter whose career spans multiple decades and notable collaborations. While widely known for fronting Riot, his contributions extend significantly into blues, power metal, and progressive rock.

I. The Riot Era (1993–2006)

DiMeo's most significant chapter began in 1993 when he was chosen to front the legendary American metal band Riot, replacing Tony Moore. This marked a major rejuvenation for the band, which had been on hiatus.

  • Vocal Identity: DiMeo's powerful, gritty, and blues-tinged vocal delivery provided a fresh, yet classic, hard rock sound that defined this era of Riot. His style helped bridge the gap between Riot's classic metal roots and the developing European power metal scene.

  • Key Albums: He recorded six studio albums with the band:

    • Nightbreaker (1994)

    • The Brethren of the Long House (1995)

    • Inishmore (1998)

    • Sons of Time (1999)

    • Through the Storm (2002)

    • Army of One (2006)

  • The Nightbreaker Legacy: Nightbreaker is often cited as the flagship album of the DiMeo era, featuring his vocals on both new tracks and re-recorded classics, firmly establishing his place in the band's history.

He remained the steady voice of Riot until the band's temporary hiatus in 2006.

II. Solo & Collaborations (Masterplan and Beyond)

Following his departure from Riot, DiMeo continued to be highly active in the international music scene.

  • Masterplan (2006–2007): He briefly joined the German power metal supergroup Masterplan as the lead singer, recording the album MK II (2007). This move solidified his reputation in the European metal community.

  • The Lizards: He was the frontman for the New York-based classic hard rock band The Lizards, known for their high-energy, classic rock revival sound and frequent performances with original Deep Purple and Rainbow drummer Ian Paice.

  • Progressive & Power Metal: DiMeo has contributed vocals to numerous projects, including Ilium, Creation's End, and the melodic rock supergroup Ten (where he was featured as a session vocalist).

III. The Blues Connection (Johnny Winter)

One of the most notable aspects of DiMeo's career is his work as a keyboardist and organist in the blues domain.

  • Johnny Winter: He toured and recorded extensively with blues legend Johnny Winter, providing Hammond B-3 organ and keyboards on the albums Roots (2011) and the posthumously released, Grammy-winning album Step Back (2014). This role highlights his versatility, moving seamlessly between heavy metal stages and blues clubs.

IV. Early Career and Deep Purple Audition

Before joining Riot, DiMeo was already active in the New York rock scene. A famous anecdote from his early career involves an audition for one of rock's biggest names.

  • Deep Purple Audition: In the early 1990s, he was personally auditioned by Ritchie Blackmore to potentially replace Joe Lynn Turner in Deep Purple. DiMeo even recorded several demo tracks with the band, though ultimately they chose to reunite with Ian Gillan.

Mike DiMeo's career is defined by his powerful voice, his instrumental skill, and his ability to contribute meaningfully to diverse genres, from traditional metal and hard rock to blues and progressive music.
