This album introduced Mike DiMeo as Riot’s new lead vocalist, establishing a lineup that would remain remarkably stable for over a decade.
In the late ’80s and early ’90s, Riot’s music was dominated by high-speed power metal, with intricate solos, rapid-fire riffs, and intense energy. While technically impressive, the band faced lineup instability, particularly with vocalists.
Mark Reale realized that for Riot to evolve, the band needed a new direction:
Slower, groovier tempos with stronger melodic focus
Emotional and expressive vocals capable of both soft and heavy passages
Songwriting structured around atmosphere and storytelling
Long-term stability and musical consistency
Mike DiMeo was a rising singer from Brooklyn, active in the local hard-rock and blues scene. He stood out because of his warm, soulful tone, versatility, and musicality—qualities not found in previous Riot vocalists.
When Mark Reale received DiMeo’s demo tape, he was immediately impressed. DiMeo could:
sing with both power and subtlety
deliver melodic and emotionally rich performances
maintain control over dynamic passages
complement the dual-guitar harmonies and heavy riffs
At the audition, DiMeo performed both classic Riot tracks and new material. His range, control, and musical feel convinced Reale that he was the right choice to lead the band into a new era. From that moment, DiMeo became the anchor for Riot’s long-lasting stable lineup.
