Peter Perez

Pete Perez is a highly respected American heavy metal bassist, most famously known for his extensive and prolific tenure with the legendary New York-based band Riot (later Riot V). Hailing from San Antonio, Texas, Perez established himself as a technically proficient and dynamic musician, providing a driving rhythmic foundation for several key metal acts across two decades.

Early Career and First Bands (Late 1980s)

Perez began his professional career in the late 1980s. His earliest known work was as the bassist for the band Syrus, where he was active between 1988 and 1990, honing the aggressive yet melodic style that would define his sound.

The Defining Riot Era (1990–2007)

The most significant chapter of Perez’s career commenced in 1990 when he joined Riot, becoming a mainstay during the group’s "second era" led by founder Mark Reale. His robust and melodic bass work became the bedrock of the band’s sound, contributing to their resurgence and enduring popularity, especially in Japan and Europe.

Perez's discography with Riot includes six crucial studio albums, on which he served as the sole bassist. This run began with the band adopting a heavier, renewed sound:

  • In 1993, he appeared on Nightbreaker, his first studio recording with the band.

  • This was followed by The Brethren of the Long House in 1995, an album noted for its epic themes.

  • In 1997, he contributed to Inishmore, a highly-rated power metal album often considered a career highlight for this lineup.

  • As the decade closed, he played on Sons of Society (1999).

  • The new millennium brought Through the Storm in 2002.

  • His final studio contribution to the band’s legacy was the album Army of One in 2006.

Perez remained the bassist for Riot until his departure in 2007.

  • Between 2006 and 2007, he joined the reformed California metal group Leatherwolf (correctly spelled), where he played on their albums World Asylum (2006) and New World Asylum (2007).
