NEW YORK, November 24, 2011 — In a recent candid interview with Powerline magazine, legendary RIOT guitarist and founding member Mark Reale revealed his deep satisfaction with the band’s reunited classic 'Thundersteel' lineup and expressed his fervent wish for the current iteration to remain intact for years to come.
The lineup—which features vocalist Tony Moore, bassist Don Van Stavern, guitarist Mike Flyntz, drummer Bobby Jarzombek, and Reale—is celebrating the release of their latest album, Immortal Soul. Reale sees the new record not just as a comeback, but as the legitimate successor to their seminal 1988 classic, Thundersteel, and 1990’s The Privilege of Power.
“Immortal Soul is basically the follow-up to Thundersteel and Privilege Of Power 20 years later,” Reale stated. He highlighted the distinctive sound and chemistry of the reunited members, noting that while the new material preserves the beloved 'Thundersteel' feel, it also incorporates a more “modern power metal twist.” He praised the collective effort, emphasizing that everyone “brought their 'A' game” to the recording process.
Reale also provided insight into the long-awaited return of frontman Tony Moore, who left the band over two decades ago due to managerial conflicts. After the initial reunion shows, the guitarist admitted that Moore needed time to adjust to the overwhelming fan demand for a permanent reunion and a new album.
“After his short departure, we had a band pow-wow and we decided to give it a shot again,” Reale recalled. “Tony’s vocals are a big part of this sound and we were exciting to have him back... The vocals sound better than 20 years ago! It’s amazing.” The guitarist concluded the sentiment by expressing his hope: “Hopefully we can keep this unit together for years to come, God willing.”
Addressing recent setbacks, Reale confirmed that the band was forced to cancel shows due to an emergency health issue concerning Moore. The singer recently underwent oral surgery—specifically, a bone graft to treat an infection in his jaw—and is currently in recuperation.
While disappointed about the cancellations, Reale reassured fans that Moore is in good spirits and recovering well. Crucially, the doctor has confirmed that the surgery will not affect his vocal range, ensuring he will be 100% ready to perform the demanding new material. As a result, RIOT is actively looking to re-book their postponed European tour dates for the beginning of next year.
Regarding the upcoming live shows, Reale stressed that RIOT’s philosophy remains centered on authenticity and musical integrity. “The cool thing about RIOT is that we have never relied on a giant stage production or gimmicks,” he said. “We’ve always been about the music and performance.” Fans can expect a loud, fast, and passionate performance featuring material from across their extensive catalogue, including some very early tracks that the band hasn't played in years.
